Spring has sprung and now is the time to get outdoors and fully enjoy the change of the seasons. Check out Hayes Timber in Washington or Brinton Timber northwest of Brighton for some great spring wildflower viewing. The earliest flowers, such as spring beauty and Dutchman’s breeches, tend to be white, but the later blooms tend to be more colorful. Take a wildflower field book out and learn the names with your child. If such things deter you, then just enjoy the blooms and maybe do some creative brainstorming with your child to come up with your own name for the flowers – the experience is more important than pure facts. Also listen for the increase in bird song and see if you can spot some males showing off for the ladies.
Opportunity: Interested in more guided activities, games, literature, and tools for your outdoor adventure? The Marr Park Conservation Center offers Park Packs for families and youth groups to borrow. Pack themes are Birds, Insects, and Animal Detectives.
