We are in our last chapter for the year which reviews measurement. The kids have been spending time measuring things around the room and themselves.
Homework will be just the timed tests for the rest of the year. Please continue to work on memorizing the multiplication facts!
Welcome to the Kalona Elementary Third Grade Blog! Classroom happenings, events, and reminders will be featured.

FFA Members visit Mrs. Bender's class
Members of Mrs. Schmidt's FFA class for economics visited the week of May 7th and shared a lot of interesting information with the class. Dylan Wertz, Jessica Schrock, Sarah Altenhofen, and Tom Stumpf entertained the class with a game of charades about farm animals, did some apple taste testing and created a healthy snack out of grapes, pineapples and apples. The kids learned a lot about agriculture and enjoyed the snacks!
Chinese
For the next couple of weeks the kids are going to be working on creating their Dragon Boats in Chinese class. Mr. O'Brien shared information and the history about Dragon Boat racing in China. Each group will be creating and racing their own boats.

Mother's Day Tea
Don't forget -
Our Mother's Day Tea is Friday, May 11th from 12:15-2:30. Mothers (grandmothers, aunts or special friends, if moms can't attend) come and spend the afternoon doing stations with their student. Don't forget the tea and cookies part! (That's the one the kids are looking forward to!)
*We let the moms decide if their student can go home with them at the end of the tea at 2:30.

Stations
A busy time in stations this week. We worked on finishing up our science research, math box pages, spent some time reading and creating a frog for our May bulletin board.
Math
This week we learned a new algorithm on how to do multiplication problems with double digits. So now the kids have two ways to solve their math problems.
We also have Mr. Slabaugh coming in a couple of times a week to teach the kids multiplication raps to help them learn their multiplication facts.
Please remember to send homework back to school on time! I know several of you are busy with ball games right now, but homework shouldn't take that long to complete.

Science
Our Plants are Growing! The kids measure and record their plant's progress everyday when we meet. The have seen the roots, cotyledon leaves, true leaves, buds and flowers all develop in these past few weeks.
The kids are also working on researching their own animal or plant to locate the life cycle and interesting facts about their animal.

Stations
Not many pictures from stations today as we are getting ready for our Mother's Day Tea. There should be an invitation in the Friday Folders today.
We did take some time out to do some independent reading and of course, worked on some math.

Science
Our Wisconsin Fast Plants are quickly growing! This week we talked about the importance of transplanting plants. We even transplanted some of our plants out of their quads to give the Fast Plants more room to grow.
We then began work on our Life Cycle project. The kids have all selected either a plant or an animal to research their life cycle and find out some interesting facts. Their final project will be to present their information using a power point presentation.
