It’s time to resume recording minutes read at home on your child’s January reading log. Though Mrs. Bender and Mrs. Hartsock's reading classes may differ a bit in the "details" (ex. Mrs. Bender prefers reading logs be turned in daily, while Mrs. Hartsock only requires the log to be returned at the end of the month) - the concept is the same: students should be recording minutes read at home and need to return their reading log for minutes to be counted. This week both reading groups set reading goals for the month, which were sent home with child’s reading log. If your child read at home on January 1 – 3, feel free to add those minutes to his/her log.
We’re also going to be starting a school wide reading challenge called Reach for the Stars, which will begin on Monday, January 9. For this event, children will be asked to record minutes read at school and at home for 2 weeks. Students may record minutes read at home on both their 3rd grade reading log AND their Reach for the Stars log – so they can earn rewards both in the classroom AND through the Reach for the Stars program – yay!
We know that December was a busy month, but we only had about ½ the class participate in our “12 Days of Reading” challenge last month. Let’s see if we can get everyone on board for the month of January!
Remember, reading at home is a great way to reinforce your child’s reading skills and has been proven to increase students’ reading performance at school.
Please help your child remember to read each night and record minutes read.
Thanks!

Starting next Monday, January 9, we will begin an exciting reading incentive challenge, REACH FOR THE STARS!! The goal is to motivate our children to read. Each child benefits with reading and with prizes to earn (books!). Your school benefits by receiving free books for the library!
How it works:
1. Children are encouraged to read (or be read to) a minimum of 300 minutes in 2 weeks. Reading in the classroom and homework count too! AT THE END OF EACH SCHOOL DAY, AS A CLASS, PLEASE COUNT THE MINUTES READ AT SCHOOL! This is a great math exercise, plus it helps kids remember to write their minutes on their charts!
2. The students should log their reading time, and sponsors they have signed up, in the reading log provided to each child.
3. At the end of the event, the children will bring their reading log, wish list, and money collected to school. 100% of the pledges go to the kids and the school:
· 50% of the pledge money each child collects will buy books they choose for their home
· 50% of the pledges collected will buy books for the library for everyone to use
