A quick week...

Just a quick summary from Mrs. Bender's room:

  • Math; we continue to work on writing and saying larger numbers, up to the billions!  Remember to keep practicing the multiplication facts at home.  Coming up will be decimals.  This can be quite confusing for the kids.  Remember it is just a introduction, they don't have to master this concept at our level.
  • Science: today I got to interview the kids about their flashlights.  How they made it, what problems they had, what science terms could they use to explain their process, and what changes did they have to make along the way.  The next two weeks the kids will be working on developing their own experiment about either water, solar or wind energy.
  • Mr. Gingerich was my sub on Thursday, and he was impressed we were working on alternative energy sources.  Today he brought in a solar mirror which he had used when he taught 6th grade.  The kids were amazed at how quickly the solar mirror could burn a piece of paper or their pencils!  According to Mr. Gingerich the temperature behind the solar mirror can reach over 300 degrees!

  • Reading: learning about taking care of dragons has been a lot of fun this past week.  The kids kept a journal on how to take care of a dragon and created their own dragon hatching out of it's egg.  Next week we will finish The Garden of Abdul Gasazi and begin our Theme Test.  We also hope to wrap up Little House on the Prairie next week too.  We also learned a new vocabulary game this week.
