Mrs. Hartsock's reading group

We continue to read the novel Jimmy Spoon together, and are anxious to find out what happens to our main character, Jimmy.  Will he stay with the Shoshoni Indians, or return to his family?

Students also did a culminating project with one of their favorite "Just Right" books that they read this year.  During reading class, students are required to independently read books at their "just right" lexile level.  Research has shown that reading at a child's "just right" level (not too hard or too easy) helps them to grow the most as a reader.  You may remember that we determine this level based on DRA and MAP assessments, and have adjusted our levels throughout the year.  Next week I will send home a final lexile range for students to use when choosing books to read over the summer.  For the project, each child picked one of his/her favorite JR books that he/she read this year and identified some reasons why they really enjoyed the book.  The children then used the ipads to video tape each other telling about their favorite books.  You can view the videos by clicking on the new "Just Right Book Videos" tab at the top of our blog, then clicking on a child's name/book title.  Hopefully our videos will encourage classmates to pick up a good book this summer!
